Description
With thousands on the road, the Terry Liberator has earned its reputation as one of the most comfortable saddles for men. We recommend it to those experiencing a variety of comfort issues and are pleased to introduce a lighter, sleeker new Liberator Y Italia, handmade in Italy.

Lengthy rides or touring where body position is slightly more upright requires saddle that's anatomically supportive and has a higher degree of comfort. We designed the Liberators with a wider rear for support of sit bones, a large cutaway through the center and a relief channel off the back for pressure relief against the perineal area and some much needed air flow down below. The combination of the ergonomically shaped rear paneling and durable Dura-tek cover reduces contact with stitching and creates a soft landing pad that prevents chafing.

Superb comfort!

"Have been trying to find a saddle that works for my aging (read: 63-yr old) body, and this is the one. Had ridden a Terry Fly Ti for several years, but it just wasn't comfortable for the slightly more upright position I've had to adopt of late on my drop-bar gravel bike. Tried several, all were whiffs, until I finally got this Terry Liberator Y Italia. This one is perfect; enough padding to cushion rough roads, and the shell is flexible, too, which adds to the smooth ride. The cover is soft and also keeps you in place, no sliding around. And it doesn't have the janky, goofy look of most saddles that are this comfortable. I was worried it'd look like an overstuffed exercise bike saddle, but it just looks like a slightly plump road saddle. Can't say enough good things about this one."

Liberator Y Italia

"I have been riding Liberator Y saddles of one type or another for over 10 years. They are consistently the most comfortable saddles I've ridden for rides of 1-4 hours duration. The Y Italia is no exception. The build quality appears excellent. The only downside to the saddle is that there is not much horizontal leeway for rail adjustments. In my case, I don't need it and I can slide fore and aft on the saddle as needed for small ride adjustments when needed without effecting my comfort."

Evolved from the best into something better

"I have used five other Terry saddles since 2000. Two were worn out to the point the padding fatigued had collapsed internally. Since everyone is different, I won't pretend to know whar everyone else needs. I was halfway through a Liberator Y Elite, which was just a bit too heavy, and felt like it took three years to break in. Since the beginning of time, Terry's design ethos has been biased toward dense padding and longevity. For the most part, this worked for me, but many others did not make it through the hundreds-of-miles-long break-in period or the lack of deflection. Enter the Italia, which has just enough soft padding on top of a denser layer that it combines the best of both worlds. This saddle is comfortable on short trips as well as multi-hour high-mileage treks. It has enough underlying dense material to avoid bottoming out (sorry for the pun) but isn't hard as a rock for the first 500 miles. It's my new favorite. Of course, your results will most likely vary. I recommend this as a starting point, and I'd like to recognize Terry's generous exchange policies as a customer-oriented way to retain business."

Q&A

Questions & Answers

The Liberator Y Italia suits riders who spend extended time touring or on long road rides in a slightly more upright position and whose main concern is all-day comfort. Its wider 172mm rear supports the sit bones, while a large center cutaway and rear relief channel ease perineal pressure and improve airflow. This is an endurance and touring saddle, not a short-ride solution, so it earns its place when comfort needs to hold up over hours rather than when you simply want light cushioning for a quick spin.

The Liberator Y Italia is built around support and pressure relief, with expertly crafted foam padding. Its wider rear supports the sit bones, the large center cutaway and rear relief channel relieve soft tissue and perineal pressure while improving airflow. The ergonomically shaped rear paneling and Dura-tek cover also create a soft landing pad that reduces contact with stitching. If you want added cushioning in the same shape, the Liberator Y Gel layers thin gel on top, which can help extend comfort over longer rides.

The Liberator Y Italia manages pressure through geometry, not padding. A large center cutaway and a rear relief channel reduce contact with soft tissue around the perineal area and open airflow underneath, which matters on long touring days when heat and pressure accumulate over hours. The ergonomically shaped rear paneling and durable Dura-tek cover minimize contact with stitching and create a soft landing pad that helps prevent chafing. Together these features target the discomfort that tends to build up gradually rather than appearing right away.

The Liberator Y Italia has a 172mm rear, noticeably wider than the Fly family, because it is built for riders who sit in a moderately upright touring position and carry more weight rearward onto their sit bones. That wider platform channels weight to the sit bones where it belongs and keeps you supported over long rides. If you ride in a lower, more forward endurance position and do not need that extra rear width, a Fly Cromoly Saddle suits that posture better.

Riders in a forward or aggressive performance position should not expect the Liberator Y Italia to suit them. Its wide 172mm rear and ergonomic shape are designed for a slightly upright touring posture where weight sits rearward on the sit bones. In an aggressive position your weight shifts forward, and the wider rear works against you. If most of your riding is performance-oriented and low, look at the Fly Ti Saddle in Terry's performance range, which is shaped for a forward posture.

The Liberator Y Italia is handmade in Italy and is lighter and sleeker than the standard Liberator Y, at 342 grams versus 433 grams, on FeC alloy rails and a slightly more compact 265mm by 172mm. The ergonomic shape, center cutaway, and rear relief channel are the same, so comfort and sit bone support are comparable. Choose the Liberator Y Italia if you want Italian craftsmanship and a lighter build. If you do not need Italian construction and prefer a lower price point, the standard Liberator Y covers the same riding.

The Liberator Y Italia is built for long rides and touring where comfort must hold up over hours, so its endurance design is more than short recreational riding typically requires. If your rides are short and you sit in a very upright position, a simpler saddle such as the Cite Y Gel Saddle in Terry's recreational range is a more natural fit. The Liberator Y Italia earns its place when discomfort starts accumulating over distance and you need the wider rear support and pressure relief for sustained time in the saddle.

The Liberator Y Italia is suited to touring and long road riding in a moderately upright position. Touring means hours in the saddle where small pressure points become real problems, so the saddle distributes weight across a wider 172mm rear to support the sit bones, uses a large center cutaway and rear relief channel to ease perineal pressure, and improves airflow underneath. The Dura-tek cover and ergonomically shaped rear paneling reduce contact with stitching and help prevent chafing, which matters over consecutive days of riding.
