Beautiful Color But a Bit Snug with Layering

"This shell, on-the-go, jacket will work for me, but I wish it was just a bit larger for more layering. I wear a small in the Terry jerseys and went up to a medium in this jacket. I thought about returning it for a large, but did not want something too big and decided this medium size will work for me on most of my rides and the jacket looks great! For me the jacket can still take a base layer and jersey easily and maybe even a light weight wind gilet, also. I haven’t worn the jacket on a ride yet, but I think I will enjoy wearing it and having it in case of rain. Additionally, it has a nice soft feel inside against the skin, seems pretty breathable, has a nice high standing collar, a high visibility color, comes down longer in the back, but it has no pockets. Go up one or two sizes depending on the fit, feel, look, and layering you need and/or prefer."

Q&A

Questions & Answers

The Emergency 3 Bike Rain Jacket from Castelli is genuinely waterproof, not merely water-repellent. It's built with a 3-layer Deluge fabric rated to 20,000mm, fully taped seams, and a waterproof zipper, so water can't sneak through the stitching or closure. A high neck panel and dropped tail add protection from road spray. This means it holds up through sustained and all-day rain rather than just shrugging off a brief shower, making it a true rain layer for riders who regularly get caught out.

Carrying backup rain protection is exactly what the Emergency 3 Bike Rain Jacket is designed for. At 189g it packs down small enough to stuff into a jersey pocket or tuck into a bikepacking bag, so it's barely noticeable until you need it. Riders heading out under uncertain forecasts, or on long rides and tours where weather can turn, benefit from having a genuinely waterproof layer on hand that doesn't add meaningful weight or bulk to the ride.

The Emergency 3 Bike Rain Jacket blocks rain and cuts wind chill through its windproof panels, but it has no thermal insulation. In cold conditions you'll want to layer it over a warm garment rather than relying on it for heat. If cold weather is your primary concern rather than rain, consider an insulated option like the Velocity Thermal Bike Jacket or the Core Bike SubZ Bike Jacket. The Emergency 3 earns its place when sustained wet weather is the main thing you're defending against.

It depends on what you're protecting against. The Emergency 3 Bike Rain Jacket is a true waterproof layer built for sustained rain, with taped seams and a waterproof zipper that add some weight and reduce breathability compared to a wind shell. If most of your riding only involves light wind, chill, or brief showers that pass quickly, the Mistral Packable Bike Jacket will be lighter and more breathable. Choose the Emergency 3 when you genuinely need to lock out rain, not just blunt the wind.

The Emergency 3 Bike Rain Jacket suits commuters who ride in wet, low-light conditions well. Its 360-degree reflectivity boosts your visibility to traffic, while the high neck and dropped tail shield you from road spray kicked up by wheels. The genuinely waterproof 3-layer construction keeps you dry across a full commute rather than just a quick dash, and its packability means you can carry it on days when rain is only a possibility. That combination makes it a dependable layer for everyday riding in changeable weather.

The Emergency 3 Bike Rain Jacket has a semi-fitted, athletic cut with performance stretch fabric that moves with you and a soft knit polyester lining against the skin. It's designed to layer over a jersey rather than over bulky mid-layers, so the trim shape stays close and doesn't flap in the wind. If you expect to wear it over a thick insulated jacket in the cold, that fit won't accommodate the extra volume comfortably. For warmth, layer a thermal jersey underneath rather than sizing up.

The Emergency 3 Bike Rain Jacket is built specifically for wet-weather defense, so it's less ideal if rain isn't your main concern. Riders who only need light wind and brief-shower protection that packs away will be better served by the Mistral Packable Bike Jacket. If you want core wind-chill protection without sleeves, look to the Mistral Packable Bike Vest. And if your priority is cold-weather insulation, a thermal jacket will serve you better, since the Emergency 3 provides no warmth on its own.

The Emergency 3 Bike Rain Jacket from Castelli uses a 3-layer Deluge fabric rated to 20,000mm, not GORE-TEX, paired with fully taped seams and a waterproof zipper for genuine waterproofing. For most riders this delivers reliable protection in sustained rain. If you specifically require GORE-TEX membrane technology, consider the Swiftride GORE-TEX Bike Jacket or the Spinshift GTX Bike Jacket instead. The Emergency 3 distinguishes itself on packability and weight, offering true waterproofing in a jacket light enough to carry on nearly every ride.

The Emergency 3 Bike Rain Jacket balances waterproofing with breathability through its 3-layer Deluge construction, and the performance stretch fit moves with you during active riding. The athletic, semi-fitted cut is designed to layer close over a jersey so it doesn't bunch when you're working hard. While no fully waterproof jacket breathes as freely as an open wind shell, the Emergency 3 is engineered to shed heat and moisture well enough for sustained effort in the rain, which is where a breathable rain layer matters most.
